Coffee and Cream

I take my coffee the way you taught me,
two inches from the top with a splash of cream
swirling to a smooth, dark caramel.
The perfect complement
with your iconic apple pie.
You once tried to pass on
your legendary pie crust recipe.
But I could not compete
and was too young to appreciate
so I stuck to pouring your coffee instead.

I take my coffee the way you taught me
two inches from the top with a splash of cream.
Just tall enough to see over the counter
you showed me that smooth dark, caramel swirl.
I’d rush to take your empty cup
to see your satisfaction.
Sometimes I’d pour too much
but you’d never complain.

I take my coffee the way you taught me
two inches from the top with a splash of cream.
Yesterday, we cracked jokes
and laughed just like old times.
And just like that,
we enjoyed our last cup
of coffee and cream together.
